Green is an important color in nature. It is the color of grass and the (leaf)on trees. It is also the color of most growing plants, but"green" is more than just a color. It also means people should take some steps (protect) our environment.

There are several simple things in your everyday life which will make  difference. There is nothing new but if you follow at least some of these tips, you can be proud of(you) in the protection of the environment.

Charity (施舍): You have tons of clothes or things you want to get rid of(丢弃). they are still usable, give them to someone who needs them.

Avoid wasting electricity: Turn  the light when you leave a room. When you do not use your computer, shut it down. It's an easy habit to take up  will help you save a lot of money.

Walk or cycle: Driving is one of the biggest causes of pollution. When you want to use your car, ask yourself the following question: Do I (real) need my car? Walk or use your bike when the journey is a short one.

Rainwater: Think of recycling rainwater. This water can(use) for different purposes.

This list is far from(be) perfect but it can help you save money and protect our environment.

Mark loves adventures and is always looking for a challenge. He wants to find a place where he can have fun trying exciting sports outdoors.

Emily loves learning about sports and wants to find out about famous athletes and important events in sports history.

Lisa wants to learn new sports and get better at sports like basketball and swimming. She's looking for a place with good coaches who can help her improve.

Tom loves to exercise. He's interested in trying-new things and learning about different kinds of exercise tools.

Sarah loves playing sports with others and wants to meet new people while playing games. She enjoys playing competitive games and having fun with a team.

What kind of traveler are you? Do you take only what you need? Or do you like to pack everything you might require? If you are the latter, you' ve probably experienced the trouble、of running through airports and train stations with huge, heavy bags. 

One advantage of traveling light is that it is easier for you to get around.  You can get in and out of taxis, and on and off trains and airplanes faster, which will make your journey more pleasant.

When you pack your things, remember these helpful tips. Choose clothes that can be used for more than one purpose (目的). For example, pack shorts that can be used for hiking or swimming. Also, pack clothes that you can wear while you travel around during the day. 

Since shoes are heavy, take no more than two pairs. Notebook computers, other electronics and books can also be heavy. Unless you're traveling for work, try to put everything you'll need on your smartphone. You will reduce a lot of unnecessary weight this way.

Save space by rolling your clothes and putting them in clear bags. It also makes finding things in your bag easier. This saves space, too. Also, take a few of your toiletries (洗漱用品) in a small container. You can buy many things during the journey.

 . You will discover the freedom that comes with traveling light.

We go to bed when we' re tired. However, we sometimes wake up feeling tired even though we' ve slept for ten hours. In fact, rest is much more than our nightly hours of shut-eye.Many of us are missing out on the other kinds of rest that we badly need.

The first kind of rest is physical rest. It can be passive (被动的) or active. Passive physical rest refers to sleeping, while active physical rest includes activities like yoga. These activities help your body relax.

Have you ever heard your parents or anyone else say that they have a hard time focusing on (集中注意力于) their work? Have they ever said that when they lie down at night to sleep, they have trouble"turning off" their brains as conversations from the day fill their thoughts? These people need mental (精神的) rest. You can-advise them to take a short break every two hours throughout their workday. These breaks remind them to slow down a bit.

The third kind is sensory (感官的) rest. Bright lights, computer screens and background noise can make our senses feel tired. But this is easy to deal with. You can close your eyes for a minute in the middle of the day or put away your electronics for a while.

    ▲    Allowing yourself to enjoy the beauty of nature — just in a local park ——provides you with this kind of rest. You can also put your favorite artwork on your desk.Enjoying art is another great way to help you feel relaxed and think in new ways.

The last kind of rest is social rest. Spend some time with your family or friends. Try to open up to them and share the hard things that have been bothering you lately.

Now you know that getting enough sleep is only part of feeling truly rested. Think about what you enjoy and how your body and mind feel throughout the day. Remember, taking care of yourself is important, and getting the right kind of rest is a big part of that.

When some teenagers start a new school, they are usually nervous about being part of the group. This was exactly how it was for 15-year-old Sergio Peralta who started his school year.It was a challenge for Sergio because he was trying to keep his disability a secret from his new classmates. Born with a right hand that was not fully formed, Sergio got used to doing everything with his left hand, including writing. "As I was growing up, many people asked me what was wrong with my hand. So in the first days of school,I really felt like hiding my hand,"he said.

But Jeff Wilkins, a teacher in the school's engineering program, learned about the boy's right hand and thought Sergio' s classmates could do something. He asked them to think of a way to help. Then they considered building a robotic hand. Leslie Jaramillio , a student, said that the project(课题) showed the spirit of the engineering program. "I was introduced to them by the teacher. They ended up tēlling me that they could build me a prosthetic (假体的) hand, and I never expected it," said Sergio.

The students decided to deal with the project at once. They chose one online model and worked on it with a printer. To make sure that the end product would actually work, they put the tool to the test with a game of catch. The game was something that Sergio wasn't able to do one-handed. And with the robotic hand, Sergio could catch the ball.

Besides making the robotic hand, the classmates made friends with Sergio and helped him get used to the new school life in ways he never expected. "No one has ever offered me this tool.I'm really lucky to meet them," Sergio said.

One of the boys who loved to read The Travels of Marco Polo was an Italian explorer named Christopher Columbus. He wanted to find a western route to the Far East and visit the rich lands described in the book. In one of his writings, he said he went to sea at 14. After that,Columbus made many voyages, but he never got to China and Japan, which he had read about in the book.

Many sea captains at that time were looking for a shorter way to India than the long and tiring land route that Marco Polo had taken. By then, many sailors believed the Earth was round.Columbus believed that if the Earth was truly round, one should be able to reach India by sailing westward. He thought it would be much easier and shorter.

Columbus wanted to try out his idea. However, being just a sailor without money for ships,he needed to find support to buy ships. First, Columbus went to Portugal. People there were known as great sailors. He thought they might be interested and give help. Also, the king of Portugal wanted to find new lands. But the king, like others, thought Columbus's idea was not smart.

Columbus then went to Spain. At that time, King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I were fighting against the. They were too busy to listen to Columbus. After they won the fight, Queen Isabella I finally helped Columbus. With the support, Columbus was able to buy three small ships.

At last, everything was ready, and Columbus set sail with about ninety sailors. Directly toward the setting sun, Columbus sailed, on and on, day and night, always in the same direction.

Mom was cooking in the kitchen. This was the third time she had seen the girls 1 in the living room this week. She had tried talking to them calmly (平静地) before, but nothing worked. So she decided to deal with the situation  2 this time.

Students in Paris and Lyon recently joined traditional Chinese cultural and sports events hosted by East China Normal University.

Students from five French middle schools  (experience) calligraphy(书法) and seal carving(篆刻) with  help of Chinese teachers and students. This was the first time these activities  (offer) in those schools. Tryston Beck, a 12-year-old from Lyon, was (satisfy) with his carving of the Chinese character(文字) zhong, which means middle. He said, "The teachers from China told me  it meant. It was a very cool and fun experience."

A friendly badminton match was held between a team led by Wang Yihan and student athletes from Lyon. "The match allowed Chinese and French youths  (improve) their skills, make friends, and build bridges  future work together." said a French officer. Teachers and students also showed kung fu and tai chi at three schools in Lyon. Some local people had chances to experience it  (them).

Another officer said, "Tai chi movements may be slow, but they are very  (create) and artistic. These activities will help more French  (teenage) understand Chinese culture."

My mum did not agree to buy another model racing car for me. She said it would be a waste of money. I am angry with her.

I want a pair of basketball shoes for my training. But I do not want to ask my parents for money.

I get as much pocket money as my sister does each month. But my money runs out much more quickly than hers.

I think I can spend all my lucky money. But my father does not allow me to.

We have heard about several"poor students" in the past year. Cui Qingtao,a student from Yunnan,working with his parents on a building site when he got an admission letter(录取通知书) from Peking University.  She is a student from Hebei. She was doing her part-time job in a different city when her family got her admission letter from Peking University.

 For example, they are all strong and optimistic(乐观的). Li Enhui said in an interview,"As long as we are alive, there are no problems that cannot be solved, and many people don't have my experiences.          " Such an idea makes many adults feel embarrassed. He refused to accept donation money and decided to make money by himself. This is also the common thing that"poor students" have.

Whatever kind of values you hold, such personalities(品格) are necessary for growth. Not everything goes well all the time. Only being strong and optimistic can one go through difficulties.In fact, living in poor families doesn't promise such good personalities, and living in happiness doesn't promise optimistic attitudes(乐观态度). We like such"poor students" because they are strong and optimistic.

For them, few can choose their lifestyles.  That is why they are highly praised. Every one of us should learn from them.

He was an old man who fished alone in a boat and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish, the boy's parents had told him that the old man was now exactly and finally salao, which is the worst form of unlucky, and the boy had gone at their orders in another boat which caught three good fish the first week.

It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his boat empty and be always went down to help him carry fishing tools.

The old man was thin with deep wrinkles(皱纹) in the back of his neck. His hands had the deep scars(疤) from dealing with heavy fish. But none of these scars were fresh.

Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same colour as the sea and were cheerful and full of confidence.

"Santiago," the boy said to him as they climbed from the bank where the boat was pulled up. "I could go with you again. We' ve made some money."

The old man had taught the boy to fish and the boy loved him. "No." the old man said. "You' re with a lucky boat. Stay with them."

"But remember how you went eighty-seven days without fish and then we caught big ones every day for three weeks."

"I remember," the old man said. "I know you did not leave me willingly."

"It was papa made me leave. I am a boy and I must do what he told me to."

"I know." the old man said. "I quite understand that."

"He hasn' t much faith(信念)."

"No." the old man said. "But we have. Haven't we?"

"Yes." the boy said. "Can I offer you a beer on the Terrace and then we'll take the fishing tools home."

"Why not?" the old man said. "Between fishermen."

They sat on the Terrace and many of the fishermen made fun of the old man and he was not angry.Some other older fishermen looked at him and were sad. But they didn't show it and they spoke politely about the sea, the weather and of what they had seen.

New research has found that wells dug by wild horses in deserts provide valuable drinking water.This helps other animals too, as black bears and American badgers have been found drinking at the wells.

A team of researchers from Australia, Denmark and the US set up remote cameras at four desert locations in the US. Wild horses had used their feet to dig wells as much as two meters deep at these sites, so they could reach water under dry river beds and streams. The cameras were used to watch over the sites and were set to record whenever an animal moved in front of them.

The scientists saw plenty of comings and goings by horses but they were most interested in which other animals came to drink at the wells. Over the course of three summers, beginning in 2015, the team recorded 57 kinds of other large animals visiting the wells, including wild cats and deer. The team also found that the wells offered water to desert plants.

Researcher Erick Lundgren, from Aarhus University in Denmark, described the wild horses as"natural engineers" — animals that change the environment around them. Perhaps the best known natural engineers are beavers(河狸). Beavers cut down trees with their teeth, creating space in woods where sunlight can reach smaller plants and allow them to grow. Then beavers use the wood to create dams across rivers, which help clean pollution in water and protect their homes.

More than 12,000 years ago, several kinds of horse-related animals lived in North America but they all died out. Today's wild horses develop from animals that were brought to America by humans in the past few hundred years. By digging wells that help other animals, they may be providing a similar service of natural engineering once given by their extinct relatives.

I'm Cathy, a middle school student. Last summer vacation, I became a volunteer. I volunteered in a children's center. There were about 50 children there. I 1 some babies and elder children.

I liked helping out in the baby rooms. Those babies were so small and lovely. At first, I felt a little 2 to see those babies because their parents left them there and had to work. But after I3 that they were cared for well,I felt much better.

One of the 4 was special. She was only one year old, but she was very smart. She smiled as soon as she saw me. She liked to be with me and I was 5 every time she was pleased and smiled at me.

The Amazon rainforest in South America is the largest rainforest in the world.It covers about seven million square kilometres and spreads across eight countries.

The Amazon rainforest is very important because it is home to thousands of animals and insects.

However, people are destroying the area by cutting down many of the trees.This is called "deforestation".Many living things lose their homes because of deforestation.As a result, the number of kinds of animals and trees is decreasing(减少).

We must do our best to protect the Amazon rainforest.

Waste pollutes the environment, harms people's health and causes animals to die.It also gets in the way of green development.We can't make money at the cost of the environment; we should leave clean water and green mountains to our next generation.

China is getting really serious about waste now.We are taking less waste from developed countries.From January 2018, China started to stop 24 kinds of waste coming into our country.And more laws and rules about dealing with waste have been made.Anyone who breaks the law will be punished.

China also tries to put waste into good use.One example is the waste electricity factories.They burn waste to make electricity in a green way.No harmful gases or water will get into the environment.

The Chinese government is encouraging people to do waste sorting(分类).Cities like Shanghai, Chongqing and Beijing have had their own sorting systems.Waste sorting is a new fashion.More and more people are forming the habit of separating their waste.
