You may think that having less water is because of having less rain, but it is now a problem in southern China, an area in which it rains often.

The government said that Shenzhen was facing its most serious water shortage ever. Other cities in the southern part of China, like Chengdu and Guangzhou, are also becoming "thirsty" though they have more rain and are close to more rivers and lakes, The Paper reported. So why are they still short on water?

In these big cities, populations are growing fast. As a result, people and factories need more water.

Climate change is making the water problem worse. Most cities in Guangdong province depend on the Dongjiang River as their main source of water. In 2021, the river was reported to be drying up.

Water pollution also makes it harder to get clean drinking water. Factories and farms don't use water well. Some cities have enough rain but don't have big lakes or reservoirs (水库) to store water, so the water goes out into the sea.

But there is a hidden water resource (资源) right under our feet. That's "groundwater". We can't see it. However, it plays an important role in our lives. About 98 percent of Earth's fresh water is groundwater. It is 60 times as plentiful as the fresh water in lakes and rivers. But in many places, people overuse and pollute groundwater. We should pay more attention to this hidden water resource.

I recently read an article about how much time the average person spends doing things around the world. The statistics (数据) are changing all the time, of course—and the survey doesn't cover every country so it may not paint a fair picture of some populations, but it was still fascinating.

The survey showed some interesting differences between countries. For example, Mexicans must have fun, because they laugh more than any other population. Germans spend the most time with friends, and surprisingly maybe, Americans play the most sports. Then there are the toe-tapping (欢快的) Russians: the average Russian dance 15 times a month!

When you add up the amount for different activities in an 80-year lifespan (寿命), you get some shocking results. For example, the average person in the developed world will spend about 11 years in front of a computer, phone, or TV screen—much longer than we spend exercising. It's one important reason why we spend about 25% of our whole lives sitting in a chair!

The other main reason is work. A working life for the most people lasts about 116,000 hours (about 13 years), and you may be sitting down all day at a desk or factory machine. That's bad news, since medical studies have shown that sitting down too much is very bad for your health.

Of course, we spend a lot of our lives sleeping, too—about one third of our lives. That might seem like a waste—we could do more with our lives if we didn't sleep. But scientists say that sleep is important to our physical and mental health. And let's face it. If we stayed up all night, we'd probably just spend the extra time checking our phones!

After reading the survey, I thought about all the time I must have wasted over the years just sitting on the sofa. From now on, I've decided that I'm going to watch less TV, spend less time playing video games, and play more sports. Clearly, if I increase my exercise by only 5%, I'll do enough to run around the world twice!

Does the amount of water stay the same? For the most part, yes. Water on Earth is part of a closed system. That is, water is always moving and changing forms between ice, liquid, and gas. The form of the water changes all the time, but the total amount of water on Earth remains the same.

If Earth is not necessarily running out of water, why are people worried? Why do we need to think about saving water? First, humans can only use fresh water, which is only 3.5% of all of Earth's water. Second, of this 3.5%, only 1% is available for human use. Most fresh water is found in glaciers far from where anyone lives. Third, the amount of water that is useful for humans is being used faster than it can be cleaned and put back into the environment.

Now, knowing the facts about water, it is our job to make sure we use Earth's water in a good way.

Listening is an important ability in the communication. Without the ability of effective (有效的) listening, messages are easily misunderstood. If there is one communication ability you should learn, then listening is it. Here are four tips for effective listening. 

When someone is speaking，it's time to stop what else you are doing，so you can focus on listening. Put your phone away，turn away from your computer，put aside your thoughts about what you're going to have for lunch，and just listen to what they're saying. 

There are a number of signs to show that you are listening. For example，when people are listening carefully，they will make eye contact with the speaker，nod，and make sounds such as 'Mm-hm'. This makes the speaker more likely to continue. 

The words that speakers choose are important. However，a lot of communication is non-verbal（非语言的）. For example，when we are excited，we will talk faster，and more loudly，and the pitch of our voice goes up. When we are upset about something，our voices drop，and we may avoid eye contact. So you can listen to not only words but also what the speakers really mean. 

Listening does not mean never talking yourself. An important part of the listening is making sure that you have fully understood the message. Asking questions is one of the easiest ways to show that you are listening as well as whether you have understood the message or not.

Have you ever heard of the Silk Road? Do you know what an important role it plays in the whole world? Did you visit any famous places along the road? Although it's called the Silk Road，people bought and sold much more than silk. The Silk Road went through Asia, the Middle East，North Africa and Europe. It was 6, 500 km from Xi'an to Rome. 

My dad is very interested in the Silk Road and he has told me many things about it. Last summer, my family got away for a holiday and went to some places on the road. 

We started at Lanzhou and went on to Wuwei. Wuwei was a very important city on the Silk Road. It connected (连接) three main cities in the area. In ancient times, it was also a capital. Although it's now a modern city, you can get a feeling of history when you visit it. We saw lots of very old stone monuments（纪念碑）and people there were very proud of their city's long history. 

The next stop was Jiayuguan. It's on the edge (边缘) of the desert, and was also an important place on the Silk Road. It was a busy city with a lot of people coming and going. Even today, it's a city that many business people travel through. An important part of the Great Wall was also built here. 

After that, we went on to Yumenguan. I first found out about Yumenguan in the famous poem written by Wang Zhihuan. It was in the Gobi Desert and was the only connection between Central Asia and China. I wonder how people ever made it through the hot desert so long ago. 

This trip wasn't just a scenic (观光的) journey. It helped me understand the history of the area and see how people from different places influenced (影响) each other in many ways. 

Su Qingwu，a post-90s girl from Wenzhou, east China's Zhejiang Province, has built a pavilion（亭子）in her garden by hand. It's a copy of a pavilion in the Palace Museum. 

As a photographer, Su often had chances to visit local handicraftsmen（手工艺人）and take photos when they were working. Slowly she became interested in traditional handicrafts and searched for information about them online. "It all began with a photo of a pavilion in the Palace Museum I saw on the Internet. I fell in love with the colours and structure of it. Why don't I build one at home?" she said. Soon she began to bring the idea to life. 

Building a pavilion without glue or nails（钉子） wasn't that easy for Su. She started to learn the woodworking skills by reading books and watching videos. She also searched every corner of the town for the things she needed. It seemed easy at first, but it was a different story when she was building the pavilion. She had trouble making a drawing of the pavilion at the beginning. She kept trying and found her own way, but the mortise-and-tenon joint was a big headache for her. In order to solve the problem, she visited the Palace Museum in person, found the pavilion in the photo, and studied the mortise-and-tenon joint carefully. Finally, her pavilion was completed. 

It took Su 150 days to build her first pavilion. Later, she spent 200 days building a Tang-style pavilion. It is bigger and more difficult to build than the first one. She is now planning to create another copy of the pavilion in the Palace Museum in the near future. "These traditional handicrafts show the confidence in Chinese culture. I want to promote the Chinese traditional handicrafts through building more pavilions, so more people can see them one day. " Su said.
