An experience in China showed me how food can be a bridge between cultures. A Chinese friend took me to a restaurant in Beijing to show me a famous dish. He told me it was something unique and I didn't eat it before.

Then I found it was ban mian. It was delicious, but I thought I tried it before. Is this not just pasta（意大利面）with Chinese style?

The Chinese ban mian made me think about the history of pasta. Italian explorer Marco Polo brought back pasta from China in the 13th century. Then it came to the UK and it kept changing.

Over the meal, I also looked back at my family's history. My father's family is Italian. My grandma told me that throwing the pasta on the wall can help to see if it's cooked. If it sticks（粘住），then it's ready to eat. But if it falls, then it still needs time to cook. Do Chinese do the same thing as Italians?

Homework is a problem for students all over the world. As a student, you have a lot of homework to do every day. It's a major part of going to school. It's the best way to review what you have learned in class. And it helps you understand important concepts（概念）。

Luckily, there are several things you can do to make homework less difficult.

Be sure you understand the homework.

Write your homework down in your notebook if you need to. Don't be afraid to ask questions about it. It's much easier to ask the teacher during or after class than to try to remember later that night!

Use your time at school.

Many schools have study halls. They are designed to allow students to study there. It's more interesting to play with your friends. But the more homework you finish at school, the less you' ll have to do that night.

Take a break.

It is difficult to hold your attention for too long. So take some breaks while doing your homework. Sitting for too long without relaxing will make you feel very tired. Taking a 15-minute break every hour is a good idea for most people.

Make a plan.

If you don't finish your homework at school; think about how much you have left, so you can budget your time. More students have between 1 and 3 hours of homework a night. If it's a heavy homework day, you' ll need to spend more time on it. It's a good idea to make a homework timetable, especially when you want to enjoy sports or other activities.

Different students have different ideas about doing sports. Here is a survey from the same school.

What brought you and your friends together? Was it shared  （爱好）or similar values?Besides these common reasons, genes（遗传基因）may also  （影响）our choices of friends.

A US study with 1,932 people showed that friends have a kinship coefficient（亲缘系数）of 0.0014,higher than that of strangers! The kinship coefficient is a  （有用）way to see how two people are genetically connected——the higher the number, the closer the relation.

This number holds a special  （意义）. The kinship coefficient between parents and children is about 0.25. For first cousins, it's about 0.0625, while for  （第四）cousins, it's around only 0.001. This means you might share more genes with your best friend than with some family members.

The question is: why do people with a higher level of kinship coefficient become friends more  （容易）? The scientists found that many similar genes are connected to the  （感官）of smell.This means that close friends may have a similar smell.

Media designers are using AI to create artistic pet images（图像）, such as fashionable cat models,attracting ad makers and businesses.

Since April last year, Chen Jian has got a large following on social media by posting AI-generated（生成）images of cats copying human behavior. One of his most popular posts shows a cat practicing baduanjin,a traditional Chinese fitness exercise. It has received over 160,000 likes.

Chen's work is among more than 140,000 posts on a certain media platform with the keywords"AI"and"pets", mostly presenting animal images doing human activities like dressing up, dancing, taking exams, and posing for photos.

Chen, in his thirties, works as an art designer at an internet company in Shanghai. He studied the text-to-image AI tool Midjourney in 2022. "I picked up new skills in my spare time, fearing that AI might replace（取代）designers one day," Chen said. His goal was to use AI tools to improve his design abilities.

Chen's idea of the exercising cat came from his personal experience. He had a health problem at that time, and a traditional Chinese medicine doctor advised him to do baduanjin to build up his body.As he practiced the exercises himself, he encouraged people around him to join and then created AI-generated cat images to raise public awareness about health.

"AI tools were becoming popular, yet many people knew little about them. Moreover, there were hardly any human-like pet images generated by AI, which probably explains why my work caught people's strong interest," Chen said.

Today, with over 50,000 fans, he has attracted attention from businesses. He chose to work with some well-known milk tea makers, car companies, and internet app developers. "Working with them makes more people notice my work, which is a win-win situation," Chen said.

Looking ahead, Chen plans to move beyond text and images, exploring AI-generated video creation.

If you saw a man standing on top of a car, dressed like a monkey, and throwing seven balls in the air in your town, you might be a bit surprised. But during the Edinburgh Festival, it's something completely normal.

The festival takes place in August and is famous for its thousands of unusual and creative shows.You can walk down the street and see all kinds of performances for free, or go into theatres, pubs or rooms to watch live acts. There's just about every form of entertainment（娱乐）you can imagine,including plays, dance, music, and children's theatre.

The Edinburgh Festival is actually several festivals all in one month. The largest is the"Fringe Festival", described as the"biggest arts festival in the world" in the"Guinness（吉尼斯）Book of Records". In 2002, there were 1,491 shows with 20,342 performances. The other festivals are the"Jazz Festival", the"Film Festival", the"Military Tattoo" and mini-rock festivals.

With so many exciting performances, it's no wonder that the Edinburgh Festival has attracted（吸引）people from around the world each year.
