 Animals are our friends. The Asian elephant is loved by people around the world. 

 Pandas are in danger. There are only about1, 600 pandas in the wild today. Zoos and research centers are looking after about 340 pandas. Pandas do not have many babies, and baby pandas often die. The situation is getting very difficult. Scientists are doing a lot of research to help pandas produce more babies and help baby pandas live. 

 Pandas live in the forests and mountains of Southwest China. Each panda needs to eat a lot of bamboo every day. The bamboo forests are getting smaller, so pandas are losing their home. 

 In order to protect pandas in the wild, the government is setting up nature parks and developing other plans. The nature parks will be big and there will be more bamboo to feed the pandas. Pandas born in zoos may go back to live in the nature parks. 

 The World Wide Fund for Nature(WWF) wants to protect all animals. And it chose the panda to be its symbol. We do not want to lose tigers, elephants or any other animals, so the WWF is working hard to save them all. 

In China, many people are leaving the countryside to find jobs in the cities,  in some European cities, people have  different idea. They are moving out of the cities. These rich families want to  a quieter life. They are tired of the noise and the dirt(尘土) of the cities, and they are tired of the crowded streets, crowded trains and buses. They don't want to live in the cities any more. They want a house a garden in the countryside , and breathe the  air there. 

 So they move out of the cities. Some don't go very , just to the towns near the cities. . people move to the countryside with sheep, cows and green fields. There, they start their new life and try to make new  . 

 Not all those who move from the city to the countryside are happy. After  or three years, many people feel that it is a big mistake. They don't so much money and there isn't much work to do. People in the countryside are very different and aren't always very friendly. 

 Most of the planes we see are white. But do you know why the planes are painted like this?

 Actually, white is not their natural color. But there are many advantages(优点) if they are painted white. It is a good way for airlines(航空公司) to protect their plane from sunlight. Another reason is that white paint can reduce (减少) heat and any possible damage(损坏) from sun radiation(辐射). Less heat also means lower cooling cost for airlines. 

 That's not all. The airplane company staff check the plane's surface each day. White paint makes it easier than colorful paints for staffs to find out the cracks on the plane' s surface. Most importantly, safety is a matter that we should pay more attention to. At night or in bad weather, it will become more difficult for the ground monitoring station to see the plane flying in the sky. So white planes can help people reduce this bad effect(效果) when the planes are seen clearly in the special environment. 

 The cost of keeping a plane in the best situation is mainly considered by many airplane companies. Actually, a colorful appearance looks good but is useless. Colorful planes often lose their color after flying for several years. Especially, bad weather, the main reason, will do harm to their appearance. Airlines will have to spend time and money repainting their planes. In order to cut the unnecessary cost, many airlines will paint them in white or keep most of the planes' appearance in white instead of other colors. 

 All in all, the color white is a better choice.

 We all have experienced the strong link between smell and memory. A whiff of chlorine(一股氯气) probably reminds you of summer pool parties, while the scent of flowers may bring back memories of your grandma's garden. Now, researchers from the University of California, Irvine (UCI) have found that breathing in pleasant smell could even help improve memory and learning.

 The study, led by Cynthia Woo, invited 43 healthy adults aged between 60 and 85. The scientists divided them into two groups. The test group(实验组) was provided with some natural oils with different fragrances(芳香). They included orange, eucalyptus(桉树), lemon, peppermint(薄荷), rosemary(迷迭香), and lavender(熏衣草). However, the control group(对照组) only received fewer types of natural oils with different fragrances.

 The participants were asked to use one of the scented oils(香精油) to perfume(使...充满香味) their homes for two hours every night for six months. They were also asked to change the fragrances every night.

 At the end of the six months, all volunteers took a memory test. The test group outperformed the control group by a shocking 226 percent!

 Woo and her team thought that it does not matter when the scents are taken in. However, varying the fragrances is the key. The scientists believe the changes of different smells helps activate (激活) the memory centers of human brains.

A new study has found that certain fragrances may help prevent memory loss in adults. The findings were published in   the journal Frontiers in Neuroscience on July 24,2023. The study also showed that certain fragances could probably also help improve memory in younger people.

 The UCI team's next plans are to carry out a similar study on older people who already suffering from memory loss. They are eager to learn if pleasant smells can help reverse(逆转) the memory loss.

 In Gansu province, three generations of workers have worked hard to stop desertification.

 Babusha,a big sand dune(沙丘) at the edge(边缘) of the Tengger Desert, was a big cause of sandstorms in the 1980s. The desert destroyed farmland and villages in its south, and affected more than 30,000 people. However, with the effort of"the six old men"and their children and grandchildren, now,a green belt, which is 10 kilometers long and 8 kilometers wide, has been built.

 This project is time-consuning. Guo Chaoming and five other villagers first had the idea of renting 5,000 hectares (公顷) of sandy land to plant trees in 1981. Their original goal was to prevent sandstorms from destroying their crops. At the time, Guo, the oldest of the six, was already 61, while Zhang Runyuan, the youngest, was not yet 50.

 At first, they planted 667 hectares of saplings (幼苗) . However, after the first sandstorm, no more than 30 percent survived. After countless failure, they successfully thought of the idea of burying wheat straw(埋麦秸) around trees to hold the sand.

Planting trees in desert is difficult, but taking care of them was even challenging. To protect the trees, they chose to live   there for years, in a simple shelter they made from wooden poles and straw (木杆和稻草) . They used bricks(砖头) to support a cooking pot(灶台) , drank boiled water and ate steamed buns when hungry.

 In the eyes of the six men, the Babusha forest farm became their most valuable possession. Even in the 1990s, when they were lack of money, they didn't cut down a single tree or grass to sell. Time passed by and four of the six passed away. But their children and grandchildren took up the torch and continued their work.

 Now, the desert has changed into grassland and forest. The amount of plants has increased from less than 3% to more than 75%. In 2019, "the six old men"and their families were honored"Model of the Times"and"Most Beautiful Fighters" for their hard work.

 Marco and Kim left the school and walked towards home.

"I wish we could play basketball at our neighborhood park." said Kim.
