If you' re into sports, you' ve seen it happen — tennis players jump over the net to shake hands after a hard match; football players exchange jerseys(运动衣) after ninety minutes of knocking each other around; even boxers touch gloves at the beginning of each round. Players in every event, from spelling bees to golf, act in this way. It's all part of sportsmanship(体育精神), a great tradition in sports and competition. It means playing and being calm all through the match.

 Do You know how New Year comes? There are (many) than one stories in China. Here is a famous one.

 Long long ago in China, there was a monster. It had a name Nian. Nian had the body of a bull(公牛) and  head of a lion. All year long, Nian slept. At the end of winter, He woke up and had a strong (feel) of looking for something to eat. At first, he ate many (child). People were very afraid(害怕),  they locked their doors early before sunset on the days of its coming.

 Things changed on one New Year's Eve. On that day,a very old man said he could drive a- way the monster. No one believed(相信) (he). But the next morning, Nian was gone. And he never came back again! The old man's words were (exact) right.

 It is said that Nian was afraid of three things: the color red, fire and noise! So now people fall in love  them. On New Year's Day, everyone (wear) bright red clothes, light- ing fireworks(爆竹) and having fun (make) noise all night long.

Make a timetable!

 Do you have problems after starting junior high? You may have more subjects to learn and less(更少的) time for sleep. But some classmates adapt(适应) quickly to their new school life. Nick makes a timetable. It shows his daily life from 6:30 am to 10:00 pm. It helps him arrange(安排) his school days well.

 So how can a timetable help students? First, it can help them live a healthy life. Some students have no time for a good breakfast or some exercise. With a timetable, they can do them well. Second,a timetable can help them do more things in one day. It sets(设置) time for differ- ent things, so they know what to do at different times.

 You may find it difficult to keep a timetable. But when you do the same activities every day, they finally become your habit(习惯).

 Nature is full of power but nature is sometimes very interesting. Let's take some plants as an example(例子).

Monster Flower

 The monster flower is the name of the plant. It has the biggest flower in the world. To peo- ple, the plant's smell is really bad! But bees and other insects(昆虫) love this smell. And that helps the plant!

Giant Tree

 Most trees are tall. But the tallest trees in the world are red wood trees. These trees are slow growers. It takes them 500 years to grow very, very tall and very wide. Redwood trees are 300 feet tall. That's about as tall as a stack(一堆) of 40 school buses! Redwoods are 30 feet wide. That's about as wide as 3 school buses side by side.

Pitcher Plant

 The pitcher plant traps insects. This plant smells nice. Insects like its smell. But when an in- sect climbs onto the pitcher plant, the insect slips into the the pitcher plant. Quickly, the pitcher plant catches it!

Sundew Plant

 Insects love the leaves' smell of the sundew plant. But when an insect creeps or lands on a sundew' s leaf, the insect can't get away. The leaves are sticky. The insect is stuck(粘住).

 Marty is five years old, and he is the baby of the family.

 His brother Ralph likes playing basketball. "Can I play, too?" asks Marty.

"No, Marty. The basket is too high for you, and the ball is too big for your baby hands," says Ralph.

"I'm not a baby," Marty says. "I'm 115 cm!"

Then Marty sees his sister Cindy tidying her bike. She will go to the bookstore.
