Scientists have found fossils of animals with tails since hundreds of millions of years ago. Back then, early fish used their tails as fins(鳍)to swim through oceans, and run away from enemies.
Scientists believe that dinosaurs used their tails to balance their heavy heads and bodies while they walked.
Similarly, kangaroos use their tails for balance. But their tail also works as their third powerful leg, it can help push them forward. In addition, a monkey's tail can also act like a hand, helping it to hold onto tree branches.
But their roles are quite different. Most tailed insects use their tails to lay eggs. Birds use their tails to balance while sitting on trees. They also use tails to control directions. For many birds, a spread and raised tail is part of the lover-finding show. Male ones will spread their colorful tails to attract female ones.
Besides, animal that live in groups, like wolves, use different tail position to show their rank. Scientists believe those tails disappeared around 20 million years ago. Once they started walking upright, we lost them because we had no use for them anymore.
A. Although humans don't have long tails like monkeys, we did have tails!
B. As the fish walked onto the land, their tails started to change too.
C. This helped them run fast enough to catch and kill other animals.
D. Many insects also have tails.

Do you have a lucky number? What is it? Many people have a special number that they hope will bring them good luck.
In Chinese culture, some numbers are believed to be lucky or unlucky based on the Chinese word that the number sounds similar to.
For example, the word for the number 8 sounds similar to the word for "making a fortune (发财)". So, people consider it a very lucky number. Some people will even spend a lot of money to have 8s in their phone number or on their vehicle license plate (车牌照) number. The opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics began at 8:08 p. m. on Aug. 8, 2008.
The number 9 is also a lucky number because of its connection to the emperors of China. There were nine dragons on emperors' robes (龙袍) and Chinese myth held that the dragon had nine children. The number 9 also stands for "long lasting". That' s why a man always proposes (求婚) to a woman with 99 or 999 roses.
So, what's an unlucky number in China? One example is 4. Many Chinese people see 4 as an unlucky number because it sounds similar to the character for "death".
Because of this, many buildings skip (跳过) the fourth floor, and simply call it the fifth floor. In Hong Kong, some buildings even skip all floors numbered with 4, such as 4, 14, 24, 34 and all 40-49 floors. Some buildings also skip the 13th floor, as this is considered an unlucky number in some areas in Hong Kong. As a result, a building whose highest floor is 50 may have only 35 physical floors.
(1)、What makes Chinese people believe a number is lucky or unlucky?A、The shape of the number. B、The sound of the number. C、The history of the number. D、The spelling of the number.(2)、A building whose highest floor is 60 in Hong Kong might only have ____ physical floors if it skips all the unlucky numbers.A、35 B、60 C、45 D、44(3)、According to the passage, the meaning of number 9 in Chinese culture is ____.A、fortunate B、ordinary C、everlasting D、simple(4)、What is the passage mainly about?A、Numbers and old stories in China. B、Lucky and unlucky numbers in Chinese culture. C、Ways to find your lucky and unlucky numbers. D、Different meanings of numbers in different countries. -

I was playing at the front gate, trying to decide whether to walk down the street to play with Jenny, when I saw a poor man coming up the road.
"Hello, little girl, " he said, "is your mama at home?"
I nodded and opened the gate to let him get in the yard. He looked like all the homeless men who came to my home before. His messy hair hung below a shapeless hat, and his old shirt and trousers had been rained on and slept in. He smelled bad.
He walked to the door. When my mother appeared, he asked, "Lady, could you spare something to eat?"
"I think so. Please sit on the step. "
Later, my mother came back and handed him a sandwich made from homemade bread and generous pieces of boiled meat. She also gave him a bottle of milk. "I thank you, lady, " he said.
I played at the gate, watching the man wolf down the sandwich and empty the cup. After finishing the food, he stood up and walked back through the gate. "▲" he told me on the way out.
Jenny had said all the homeless men told each other who would feed them. "They never come to my house!" she had said proudly and happily.
"So why does Mama feed the poor man?" I wondered. I walked inside. "Jenny's mama says those men are too lazy to work. Why do we feed them?"
My mother smiled. "Sweetheart, we don't know why these men don't work, " she said, "but they were babies once. And their mamas loved them, just like I love you. " She put her hands on my shoulders and drew me close to her.
"For me, I fed them for their mothers, because if you were ever hungry and had nothing to eat, I would want others' mothers to feed you. "
I seemed to find out the answer to my question and understand that.
(1)、After the poor man came to the writer's home, the mother ____.A、made a cake for him B、gave him some money C、invited him to have some coffee D、offered him some food(2)、Which of the following can best fit in the __▲__?A、They said your mama would feed me. B、I would like to come to play with you again. C、It's kind of you to let me stay here for one night. D、We will ask Jenny's mother to feed us, too.(3)、The order of the story is ____.a. My mother communicated with the poor man
b. I understood my mother after talking to her.
c. I played at the gate and watched the poor man having food.
d. I opened the gate to let the poor man get in the yard.
