International(国际的) Nurses Day falls on May 12 every year. It is in memory of the birth of Florence Nightingale. Who was this lady?

Nightingale was one of the most important health workers in history. During a war(战争)in the 1850s，she worked with other nurses to care for English soldiers(士兵). She set many important rules for health care. Because of her habit of making rounds(巡诊) at night，people called her "the Lady with the Lamp(灯)". Later in 1860，Nightingale opened a health care school in London. She trained many excellent nurses in this school. 

Every year on this festival for nurses，a special activity is held in London. A lamp is handed from one nurse to another. This means that knowledge is passed from one nurse to another. 

Nurses make up more than half of all health workers，but there are still 5. 9 million more nurses needed in the world. The terrible disease(疾病) has reminded us of the importance of nurses. Without nurses and other health workers，we wouldn't be able to fight against diseases successfully. 

White Day(白色情人节) is a holiday celebrated on March 14th，one month after Valentine's Day(情人节). In Japan this day is widely celebrated，much like Valentine's Day. It is also celebrated in South Korea and Taiwan，China. 

In Japan，the difference between Valentine's Day and White Day is about who gives the gifts. In these cultures，women present chocolates to men as gifts on Valentine's Day. One month later，men should buy two to three times more expensive gifts for the women on White Day. Candy，hand­made cookies and white chocolate are popular gifts. Do you want to say "I love you. " to someone you care about? No worries if you have missed Valentine's Day. March 14th is White Day. It is also Japan's Valentine's Day—a day to show our loved ones just how much we care about them. 

Yet it is not clear where White Day came from. Some local candy makers say that they invented the day to give candy，in response to(回应) Valentine's Day. As most candy is made of white sugar，the day is called White Day. People also think that the color white stands for purity(纯洁) and love. No matter where it comes from，just make it a day to care about your loved ones!

Mother's Day is always a fun time at my house every year. This year is no exception. My brother and I want our mom to feel 1 by giving her a day off from family chores. In the morning，I woke up before everyone else to hang up a poster that 2   "Happy Mother's Day！"My dad also got up early and helped set up a rose bouquet in a vase. 

When my mom woke up，she read cards we 3 out next to her bed with a big smile. While she was watching the morning news with my dad，it was time to 4 my cooking skills. 

I made some delicious food with my brother's help. My mom and I love board games，so after a short 5 around the neighborhood，we played all of her favorites. In my family，playing a fun board game turns into a big 6 and can become very heated. One of us always becomes a loser after being beaten in the game. The afternoon games made all of us tired. A delicious takeout dinner from my mom's favorite restaurant 7 us. The festivities 8 with icecream and more quality family time，while watching one of my mom's favorite movies from her teenage years.

Every year，on January 5th，the city of Harbin in northeast China changes into a winter wonderland. Tourists from all around the world come to visit  wonderful ice and snow festival. 

The festival started in 1963 and began as a winter party. The festival often lasts for one month. However，  the weather stays cold and dry，it will go on for a few more days. Temperatures are usually very cold. They can go down to －17℃. 

Ice sculptors(雕塑家)use tools to carve the hard ice and snow. These sculptors display their works  two main areas. "Sun Island"has huge snow sculptures of people and animals. "Ice and Snow World" has sculptures of buildings. At night，these buildings light up with brightlycolored lights. 

Visitors can do a lot of other  ， such as skiing and ice sliding. They can also go swimming in the icy waters of the Songhua River.
