Devi looked through the observation window at the kids below, all waiting in line to get into the pool. She turned to her mother with a furious frown on her face. "Mom, theyˈre all little kids! Iˈm 15 already! This is ridiculous!"
"I know, Devi, " replied her mother, "but youˈre a beginner, too, and you have to start somewhere!"
Devi had never been to a swimming lesson in her life. Between schoolwork and helping on her grandfatherˈs farm, she hadnˈt had time for lessons. The closest swimming pool Devi had been to was the alligator pool her mother bought her when she was five. Now that Devi was older, her mother had found a new job in the city, and Devi faced a new challenge-school field trips to the local pool.
The first day that Devi went with her class to the pool, she had no idea what she was in for. What could be so difficult about swimming? Devi confidently slipped into the water and held onto the side of the pool, expecting to be able to touch the bottom with her feet. But when Devi let go of the side of the pool, she slipped under the water-the whole pool was one big deep end! Devi threw her arm toward the side of the pool and grabbed the ledge (池壁), out of breath. "I really canˈt swim! Everyoneˈs going to laugh at me!" she thought to herself in a panic.
On the next field trip to the pool, Devi sat on the side on a bench, paralyzed with fear. She huddled with a towel over her shoulders, too embarrassed to try again. When she came home, her mother noticed right away that Devi was upset. "Honey, Iˈve signed you up for Angelaˈs swimming lessons at the local pool. Soon youˈll learn how to swim just like everyone else, " she assured Devi, showing photos of Angela with her prize-winning students.
注意:(1)所续写短文的词数应为150左右;(2)每段的开头语已为你写好;
Paragraph 1
Then came the time for Devi to take her first lesson.

Soon Angela came over to where Devi sat and introduced herself.

Iˈve always loved the ocean. In the (seven) grade, I started volunteering at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California. I was upset to learn that many sea animals eat plastic garbage, (think)it is food.
I decided to do something (educate) people about this problem. I held presentations at schools to teach kids about plastic waste. I wanted to reach businesses too. I decided that if I learned of a company used a lot of plastic, Iˈd send it an email urging it to cut back.
One day, I saw a commercial for a health-care company. People in the ad were using plastic straws (吸管). I found the contact information of the company emailed its president. I told him how (harm) plastic could be to the environment and asked him to consider using more eco-friendly options. I was so (excite) when he wrote back to me. He said he would make sure that the company cut its use of plastic straws in half.
I kept going. Whenever I heard of businesses using plastic, Iˈd send an email. One of the biggest companies I wrote to (be) Alaska Airlines Paris. A company (represent) wrote back and told me the airline was switching overplastic to paper cups on all of its 1, 200 daily flights.

10、 阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项;选项中有两项为多余选项。
In 1985, 16-year-old Douglas Casa, ran the championship 10, 000 meter track race at the Empire State Games. Suddenly, with just 200 meters to go, he collapsed on the final straightaway, with his body temperature at dangerous levels. He had suffered an exertional heat stroke(运动型中暑)or sunstroke.
From ancient soldiers on the battlefield to modern warriors on the gridiron(足球球场), exertional heat stroke, has long been a serious concern. And unlike classical heat stroke, which affects people such as babies and the elderly during heat waves, exertional heat stroke is caused by intense exercise in the heat.
So how do you diagnose an exertional heat stroke? The main criterion is a core body temperature greater than 40℃ along with signs of central nervous system disfunction such as confused behavior, or loss of consciousness.
As far as treatment goes, the most important thing to remember is cool first, transport second. The human body can withstand a core temperature above 40℃ for about 30 minutes before cell damage sets in. After any athletic or protective gear has been removed from the victim, place them in an ice water tub while stirring the water and monitoring vitals continuously. As you wait, itˈs important to keep the victim calm while cooling as much surface area as possible until emergency personnel arrive. If medical staff are available on site, cooling should continue until a core temperature of 38. 9℃ is reached.
As Dr. J Levick wrote of exertional heat stroke in 1859, "It strikes down its victim with his full armor on. Youth, health and strength oppose no obstacle to its power. " But donˈt be frightened so much for it has been 100% survivable with proper care.
A. Fortunately he survived with immediate treatment.
B. When possible seek out places with air-conditioners.
C. So itˈs necessary to start cooling as quickly as possible.
D. But emergency services should be called before you start.
E. The sun can also take lives away if people are not careful.
F. So far it has been one of the top three killers of athletes in training.
G. It is important to keep the body temperature close to its normal temperature.

Bruce, a parrot missing part of his beak (喙), creatively uses stones to clean feathers (羽毛), highlighting advanced intelligence in parrots.
Bruce lost the upper part of his beak in 2012 and was sent to live at a reserve in New Zealand. The defect made Bruce unable to search for food on his own, let alone keep his feathers clean with his beak. But in 2021, when comparative psychologist Bastos arrived at the reserve with colleagues to study parrots, zookeepers reported something strange:Bruce had seemingly figured out how to select and use small stones to clean his own feathers with his beak.
Over nine days, the team kept a close eye on Bruce, quickly taking, videos if he started cleaning his feathers. It turned out that Bruce had indeed invented his own way to do so, the researchers reported in Scientific Reports.
"It's crazy because the behavior was not from the wild, " Bastos says. When Bruce arrived at the reserve, he was too young to learn how to clean his feathers. And no other bird in the reserve uses stones in this way. "It seems like he just invented this tool use for himself, " she says.
Tool use is just one of parrots' many talents. They're famous for copying and even understanding human speech. Some species can also solve complex puzzles, like how to enter a covered rubbish bin or practice self-control.
For a concept as abstract (抽象的) as intelligence, it's challenging to develop a definition that applies across animals. Researchers often point to features once thought to make humans special—enhanced learning, memory, attention and movement control—as signs of advanced skills. However, many of these abilities can also be seen in parrots, as well as other animals like chimpanzees, dolphins and elephants.
"Parrots are our evolutionary (进化的) mirror image. These brilliant birds may teach us about how humanlike intelligence can appear, " behavioral ecologist Antone wrote in his 2022 book The Parrot in the Mirror. With powerful brains and a preference for words, these birds are "the very best example, " he writes, "of nature's 'other try' at humanlike intelligence. "
(1)、What does the underlined word " defect" in paragraph 2 mean?A、Disadvantage. B、Playfulness. C、Cruelty. D、Measure.(2)、Why did Bastos and her team watch Bruce closely?A、To observe how he lives alone. B、To find out how he gets food. C、To prove his ability to defend himself. D、To confirm his reported behavior.(3)、What can be known concerning the parrots?A、They do well in critical thinking. B、They're born skillful at using tools. C、They can complete complicated tasks. D、They can't match other animals in memory.(4)、What's the significance of studying the parrots?A、Offering an insight into human behavior. B、Helping further research other species of birds. C、Learning more about parrots' living environment. D、Giving reference for the evolution of humanlike intelligence. -

The hens look up at me from their nesting boxes. They seem slightly annoyed but unsurprised. A child runs up, pushes one of the chickens aside, and snatches two eggs. Around me, a half-dozen more children and adults collect eggs while a half-dozen others hand-feed dried mealworms to birds flocking around our ankles. I reach for an egg from an empty nest. There is something perfect about the way it fits warmly in the palm of my hand before I transfer it into a pretty wire basket provided to me by my hosts.
The egg harvest is a brief, carefully designed agritourism experience offering an experience of the labor rather than just having a bite of food. Snatching a few eggs and uprooting a few vegetables on the farm tour donˈt constitute a full dayˈs work, but it is also a useful reminder that food doesnˈt just magically appear on restaurant plates and grocery store shelves. Of course, visitors can take those eggs home or bring them to the on-farm restaurant, Clay, where a chef will use them to prepare breakfast.
A few centuries of industrialization, urbanization, and globalization have collected people into cities, but the attraction of the countryside has always remained. In the new urban-centered world, enterprising farmers have found plenty of opportunities to sell their rural lifestyle along with their crops. Italy promoted the modern model for combining agriculture and tourism in the wake of World War Ⅱ, when the national government encouraged rural populations to continue producing food rather than move to urban areas in search of more profitable jobs.
Agritourism acts as an umbrella term for a wide variety of activities that take place on farms, including farmstays, where guests sleep on-site. For varying investments of time, energy, and money, anyone can engage in our farming system, giving consumers a peek behind the farm-to-table world.
(1)、Why does the author describe children and adults collecting eggs in the beginning?A、To introduce agritourism. B、To describe the use of eggs. C、To show the innocence of the children. D、To emphasize the happiness of the children and adults.(2)、What is accessible to consumers in agritourism activities?A、Engaging in planting vegetables in person. B、Doing some simple but meaningful farm-work. C、Enjoying some self-made egg products on the farm. D、Clarifying the farm-to-table concept through practice.(3)、What can you learn from the last two paragraphs?A、The appeal of rural life gradually fade away due to industrialization. B、The desire to search for more well-paid jobs accelerated the speed of agritourism. C、Italian governmentˈs calls contributed a lot to the trend of moving from villages to cities. D、Promising farmers were dedicated to promoting their lifestyle along with agricultural products.(4)、What is the authorˈs attitude toward agritourism?A、Doubtful. B、Dismissive. C、Supportive. D、Sympathetic. -

Where does the meat on our table come from? It usually comes from livestock like chickens and cows. But did you know that meat can also be made in a lab? US company JUST has announced that lab-grown meat could be on some restaurant menus in the United States and Asia by the end of 2018, The Independent reported.
"These meats include chicken nuggets (鸡块), sausage and foie gras (鹅肝酱), " Josh Tetrick, CEO of JUST, told The Independent. Lab meat is sometimes referred to as "clean meat". It is made using the stem cells (干细胞) of living livestock. The cells need to be grown in a lab for a few weeks. For example, making a hamburger patty (肉饼) takes about nine weeks, CNN reported. This is faster than raising a cow, which usually takes over 20 weeks.
The first clean meat was a beef burger that was produced in 2013, but it was said to taste quite dry. How does clean meat taste now? Clean meat supporters told CNN that they think it tastes just like traditional meat.
Clean meat has other advantages. It is healthier than traditional meat. Meat producers can control what type of fat goes into the meat. They can produce clean meat that contains healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids (脂肪酸). This kind of fat is good for people's hearts.
Clean meat can also help to solve global warming. According to The Washington Post, about 14. 5 percent of the planet's greenhouse gas emissions (排放) come from raising livestock. That's more than the emissions from every car, train, ship and airplane in the world combined. It is predicted that switching to clean meat could lower greenhouse gas emissions by 96 percent, The Independent reported.
(1)、Where may the meat we eat come from in future?A、Companies. B、Greenhouses. C、Labs. D、Restaurants.(2)、What can be used to make "clean meat"?A、Stem cells. B、Fatty acids. C、Hamburger patties. D、Chicken nuggets.(3)、What is the advantage of clean meat?A、It is fatty. B、It is healthy. C、It is free. D、It is smelly.(4)、What do we know about clean meat from the last paragraph?A、It comes from livestock. B、It can be switched off. C、It results in global warming. D、It benefits environment. -

A real-world study by researchers at NTU Singapore has revealed that the application of cool paint coatings in cities can help pedestrians feel up to
1.5 degrees Celsius cooler, making the urban area more comfortable for work and leisure.
Cool paint coatings contain additives that reflect the sun's heat to reduce surface heat absorption and emission. They have been regarded as a potential solution to cool down the urban area and combat the Urban Heat Island effect, a phenomenon in which urban areas experience warmer temperatures than their outlying surroundings.
Now, NTU researchers have conducted a pioneering real-world study to comprehensively evaluate how well cool paint coatings work in reducing city heat.
To carry out their real-world experiments, the NTU researchers selected four rectangular buildings that created two "street canyons"—narrow streets lined by buildings. One canyon, or "cool canyon" was coated with cool paints on the roofs, walls, and road pavement, while the other canyon remained as it was as a "control" for the experiment. Using environmental sensors, the NTU team monitored the conditions in the two canyons over two months, which included air movement, surface and air temperature, humidity, and radiation, to see how well the cool paint coatings worked in reducing city heat.
The researchers found that during a 24-hour cycle, the cool canyon saw up to a 30%reduction in heat released from the built-up surfaces, resulting in the air temperature in the cool canyon being cooler than the conventional canyon by up to 2℃ during the hottest time of the day, at around 4 pm. As a result, pedestrians in the cool canyon can feel up to
1.5℃ cooler. The NTU research team also found that air temperature in the cool canyon was lowered because less heat was absorbed by and stored in the building walls, roofs, and roads, which would subsequently have been released to either heat up the surrounding air or the building's inside.
With global warming, people will increasingly look for ways to stay cool. The study shows how cool paint coatings can be a strategy to reduce the Urban Heat Island effect in future.
(1)、What is the function of paragraph 2?A、To introduce the purpose of the study. B、To illustrate the findings of the study. C、To explain the theoretical base of the study. D、To provide background information for the study.(2)、What is the primary purpose of the real-world study by NTU researchers?A、To assess the effectiveness of cool paint coatings. B、To investigate the effect of climate on urban areas. C、To study the behavior of pedestrians in urban areas. D、To analyze the impact of urbanization on the environment.(3)、What is one potential benefit of using cool paint coatings in cities?A、Increasing air quality levels. B、Improving pedestrians' comfort. C、Enhancing surface heat absorption. D、Saving energy consumption in winter.(4)、What can we learn from the passage?A、The cool paint coatings have proved effective worldwide. B、The cool paint coatings also have markets in rural areas. C、The real-world study is a first of its kind study. D、Many cutting-edge technologies are employed in the study. -

Social media is taking over our lives: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and now, TikTok. These social media platforms have transformed from a way to stay connected to an industry where even kids can make money off their posts. While this may seem like another opportunistic(机会主义) innovation, it's really full of hidden false realities.
The median income(中位收入) recorded in the United States of America was about $63,000 in 2018. TikTokers can make anywhere from $50,000 to $150,000 for a TikTok brand partnership, and TikTokers with over a million followers can make up to $30,000 a month—$360,000 a year. They are making more than the average person trying to feed their family and keep a roof over their heads, simply by posting a 15-second video.
This is mad in more ways than one. Not only is it an overpaid "job", it promotes undeserved admiration from viewers and a false sense of reality. Many of these famous TikTokers are still teens, and the effects of fame at such an early stage in life might cause issues later in life, such as mental illness. Teens between the ages of 13 and 17 make up 27% of TikTok viewers, who can be easily influenced by what they are watching. They can put a false sense of self-value into who they look up to and what they represent: money, fame, being considered conventionally attractive.
While TikTok has become a great tool for marketing, it's important to understand how this content affects young viewers. If we're constantly consuming content that shows us all we need to do to be successful is be conventionally attractive and post a 15-second video featuring a new dance, it will challenge our knowledge of what really makes someone successful and will in turn affect our individual work ethics(伦理). What about the people who miss birthday and family holidays due to their jobs and aren't getting paid nearly as much as these TikTokers?
Richard Colyer, president and creator of Metaphor, Inc, had his own view on this issue. "It sounds great to make money for doing the latest dance moves in a 15-second video, but we should feed the minds of kids and not just their bank accounts. TikTok can be great if used properly. Money alone is not good, technology alone is not good and connectedness can be bad if it's only online."
Again, as a fellow consumer of TikTok, I do enjoy the app when I have some time to kill and need a good laugh. I' m not against someone making a living on entertainment, but what does getting famous of a 15-second video teach young people?
(1)、What does the underlined word "this" in Paragraph 1 refer to?A、Social networking. B、Making money on social media. C、A job offered by TikTok. D、Staying connected to the Internet.(2)、What do the numbers given in Paragraph 2 show?A、TikTokers are earning money easily. B、All TikTokers are richer than average people. C、Most TikTokers can become millionaires overnight. D、TikTokers earn much more than ordinary workers.(3)、Which is the possible influence of TikTok on its young users?A、They tend to live an adult life too soon. B、They are forced to pay for certain services. C、They may abandon other social media. D、They are likely to develop false value.(4)、What can we infer from Richard Colyer's comments?A、TikTok can be a positive influence if teens employ it wisely. B、Young TikTokers should be banned from making money. C、It is better to involve education on investment in TikTok videos. D、Contents of videos need checking before their release online. -

I felt encouraged by his words and began to swim more calmly. But my clothes stuck to me like a heavy weight. I could hardly stay above the surface.
Counsel saw this. "Shall I cut them?" he asked.
With a knife he cut my clothes from top to bottom and took them off quickly while I swam for both of us.
Then I did the same for Counsel, and we continued to swim near each other.
But we were in serious trouble. The crew might not have noticed our disappearance.
And if they had, they could not return because the rudder(舵)had broken. Counsel thought of all this, and calmly made his plans. We decided to wait for the ship as long as possible, because we had no other hope of safety. I suggested that we save our strength so that both of us would not be tired out at the same time. This was how we did it: While one of us lay on his back, quite still, with arms crossed and legs stretched out, the other would swim and push him along. We exchanged every ten minutes or so. In this way, we could swim for hours, perhaps till daylight. The crash of the ship and the whale had appeared at about eleven o'clock. We had about eight hours to swim before daylight. This seemed possible, if the sea remained calm.
(1)、Why did the two men help each other cut their clothes?A、Because the weather was too hot. B、Because they wanted to swim in the sea. C、Because no other people helped them to take off their clothes. D、Because their clothes prevented them from staying above the surface.(2)、What kind of situation were the two men probably in?A、A party. B、A competition. C、An accident. D、A game.(3)、What did the two men do to save strength?A、They both swam calmly. B、They lay on their backs instead of swimming. C、One of them pushed the other while swimming. D、They crossed their legs and stretched their arms.(4)、Which of the following statements is correct?A、The story took place at night. B、Neither of the two men was good at swimming. C、The crew noticed the two men's disappearance. D、The two men had been saved by a passing ship at eleven o'clock.
