Many people like to travel during their vacations. Some people travel in tour groups because they think it is safe and cheap. A tour guide takes care of the group and makes sure the tourists can see a lot of interesting and beautiful sights.  If you travel by yourself, you are free to see what you want to see.

 Some people travel to learn more about other countries' people, culture, food and languages.  They want to do some different things or do things they could not usually do at home, such as skiing. bungee jumping (蹦极跳) and mountain climbing. Other people like to shop when they travel.  It's a good way to relax themselves.

 Some people take trains, boats or buses; some fly, and others rent (租) cars and drive themselves. Some people like to travel slowly and spend a long time in each place, while others prefer quick tours, visiting more places in a short time.

How do you like to spend your vacation?

The horse-face skirt or mamianqun, is a traditional Chinese skirt that dates back to the Song dynasty. It actually has nothing to do with a horse's face. "Ma Mian" in ancient China has another meaning. It refers to a special structure of ancient Chinese city wall system. But whether its name is really related to the city wall is still a question.

During the Song dynasty, it was initially worn by high-class coursesans (歌舞伎) and was made of silk or cotton. Because of the style and its functionality, it soon spread among the upper-class ladies. In the early Ming dynasty, mamianqun was quite loose, and its style was simple, and it was characterized (是……的特征) by a high-waisted design and a skirt that looked like the face of a horse. Mamianqun in the Qing dynasty gradually developed into the everyday clothing of Han women, which was also used in wedding dresses in the late Qing dynasty. Mamianqun was still worn by Chinese women in the 1920s. After the May Fourth Movement, the difference between Chinese women's skirts and Western women's skirts became smaller, and the traditional elements gradually disappeared.

Nowadays, this traditional beauty continues to be valued by Chinese people. The Chinese actress Yang Mi wore it in the 2024 Henan TV Spring Festival Gala. It immediately became a trendy clothing on social media. Many people searched the same skirt worn by the actress on e-shopping platforms. It is called the neo-Chinese style which naturally puts together modernity and tradition.

The Earth is the energetic planet that we call home. It was formed over 4.5 billion years ago. The Earth might seem like a rock ball, but it's actually made up of four different parts.

The inner core (核心) is at the centre of the Earth. It's a hard ball of hot metal, about 70 per cent the size of the Moon. The temperature of the inner core can be as high as 5,400℃ and it's the hottest part of the Earth. The outer core circles (环绕) the inner core. Unlike the inner core, it is a liquid (液体的) layer, made mostly of iron. It's almost as hot as the inner core.

The mantle (地幔) is a thick layer. It circles the outer core and is about 2,900 kilometres thick, making it the Earth's deepest part. The mantle is mostly made of rock, but it also includes some magma (岩浆). The magma melted (融化) under high heat and pressure. It finally comes out from volcanoes.

We live on Earth's crust (地壳), a layer of rock about 30 kilometres thick. That might seem thick, but it's actually very thin, considering the size of Earth. There are two types of crusts: the mainland crust, which carries land, and the oceanic crust, which carries water. The thinnest parts of the crust are under the oceans, and the thickest parts are under the land. The Earth's crust is divided into large plates. Scientists believe that these plates are moving all the time, which explains how the world looks.

Lili Time is a cafe in Shanghai, but it is a little bit different. Some customers do not go there to drink coffee. Instead, they want to enjoy the "special" service (服务).

In 2013, when Zhang Lili was working in her first cafe, a customer gave her a note. It read, "I'm deaf but I really love coffee. Would you give me the chance to learn how to make it?" And then this customer became the first deaf barista (咖啡师) in that cafe. And there started Zhang's story with the deaf community.

Six years later, Zhang and her husband started Lili Time. Over the past few years, it has become a place filled with love. Some other cafes also have deaf baristas, but they use QR codes (二维码) to help with ordering. Lili Time does not. People need to order their coffee by talking to its baristas, even though they speak slowly and sometimes not clearly enough. But this is Zhang's plan. She wants deaf people to talk to others and be more confident. She doesn't sell coffee by delivery service (外卖服务), either. She wants there to be communication between her customers and her baristas.

At the same time, Lili Time provides a space for people to teach others skills, such as taking photos, learning English, French, and so on—all for free. They come here every week. Now, Zhang is thinking about opening a new cafe for children in need.

Maya and her parents are going to the United States to visit Maya's Aunt Vicky.

Guide dogs have long acted as the "eyes" of  (失明的) people. They can't get around w the help of a well-trained guide dog. Training guide dogs is a difficult (任务) , but thanks to The Seeing Eye, we're able to get the most out of the four-legged friends.

The Seeing Eye is the world's o guide dog school. They began to raise and train lots of guide dogs in 1929.

When Seeing Eye dogs are seven or eight weeks, they are sent to the homes of volunteer — Dog Raiser(抚养者). They teach the dogs (基本的) manners and commands(要求), and take them outside on streets and public transport. 

When the dogs are 13 to 19 months old, the raisers (返还) them to The Seeing Eye. Each dog is assigned (分配) to a trainer with wthey will train for four months.

Once the four-month training (结束) , the trainer will train the dogs with their new owners(主人) for 18 to 25 days.  

"Training a guide dog requires lots of work and (耐心), but it's well worth the 

(精力) ," says Emily Foster, who works for The Seeing Eye. "I feel happy every time I see a working guide dog in the street."

My parents always tell me to form some good habits. Firstly, they want me exercise regularly and eat because physical health is important. Then, my father wants me to

He was an old man who fished alone in a boat and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish.In the first forty days a boy had been with him.But after forty days without a fish,the boy's parents had told him that the old man was now salao,which is the worst form of unlucky, and the boy had gone at their orders in another boat which caught three good fish the first week.

It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his boat empty and he always went down to help him carry fishing tools.

The old man was thin with deep wrinkles(皱纹) in the back of his neck.His hands had the deep scars(伤疤) from dealing with heavy fish. But none of these scars were fresh.

Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and full of confidence.

"Santiago",the boy said to him as they climbed from the bank where the boat was pulled up."I could go with you again.We've made some money."

"No,"the old man said."You're with a lucky boat. Stay with them."

"But remember how you went eighty-seven days without a fish and then we caught big ones every day for three weeks."

Why do We Yawn?

①Do you yawn? There are about 20 reasons that scientists think are possible for yawning after research. They do not know exactly why yawning happens, but they do know many facts about yawning.

②We know that everyone yawns in the same way. First you open your mouth slowly. Your mouth stays open for about five seconds. You take in a lot of air and then push it out. Then you quickly close your mouth. We also know that yawning is yawn contagious(传染的). 

③Many people say they yawn because they are bored or tired. That might be true. People do often yawn before they sleep and after they wake up. However, we know that people also yawn when they are excited or nervous. Olympic runners, for example, often yawn before a race. Why is that? In 2007, scientists found that a yawn can help a warm brain cool down.

④Some scientists believe that yawning makes you notice things more quickly. When you yawn, you breathe deeply. You also stretch (强化) the muscles (肌肉) in your face, mouth, and neck. Your eardrums stretch, too. Maybe this helps you to be quicker to notice things. 

⑤In some countries, people think yawning is not nice. People put their hands over their mouths to cover a yawn. In other countries, people think yawning is healthy. They think that opening the mouth very big can let good things in. When they breathe out, they think that bad things go out of the body with the air. 

⑥Scientists do not spend much time studying yawning. That is probably because yawning does not hurt. It is just something we do.

Have you ever been on a roller coaster? If you have, you must have screamed when the roller coaster was running at the fastest speed. What an exciting way to have fun!

People have enjoyed the excitement of roller coasters for hundreds of years. Roller coaster rides began in Russia. Over 300 years ago, Russians made slides(滑梯) out of wood and ice for winter festivals. They just needed to keep watering wooden ramps(坡道) and the ramps would become huge and smooth ice slides. Then they carved(雕刻) ice seats to make sleds(雪橇) that could be used on slides. In the end, they climbed up a set of stairs at the back of the slides. This is the prototype(雏形) of roller coasters.

Gradually, people wanted to enjoy sliding all year round. In 1817, a company in Paris began to develop a facility(设备) that could lock(固定) cars on the track. The first roller coaster officially came out.

The Switchback Railway was built at Coney Island, New York, in 1884. To ride it, people had to climb a tower. At the top of the tower, they would get into a small train which took them down a 200-meter slope(斜坡). At the bottom, people got out and the driver took the train back up to the top. It wasn't much of an exciting ride because its top speed was only 10 kilometers an hour.

Today, roller coasters come in all shapes and sizes. One of the fastest is the Top Thrill Dragster in Cedar Point, Ohio. It can "reach speeds of 190 kilometers per hour, But it may not be the fastest after a while because there will always be faster and more exciting roller coasters coming out.
