Happiness Around Me

On a rainy evening, Lily was walking home from school. She forgot her umbrella (雨伞) and she had to hurry along the street. At that time she saw an old woman carry some heavy shopping bags. Lily decided to help.

"Can I help you with your bags?" Lily asked the old woman. The woman smiled and nodded her head. Together, they walked to the woman's house, talking along the way. The old woman told Lily about her life and how she lived alone. Lily felt good and happy when talking with her.

When they arrived at the old woman's house, the woman asked Lily to dry off (变干) and have some hot chocolate. Lily said yes and they spent some time talking. The old woman was very kind and told Lily how much she thanked her.

As Lily left the house, the rain stopped, and she felt warm inside. She learned that helping others not only brings them happiness but also makes her happy. From that day on, Lily made it a point to help others whenever she could.

My mom told me my first and second words (单词) were "Mommy" and "Daddy". The next one was "No". I didn't want to eat vegetables. I didn't want to go to bed early. I didn't want to study in the school. Being the "baby" of the family (I have two sisters), I said a lot of "No".

When I became a middle school student, my father had a talk with me. He asked me to say "Yes" more than "No". "You can have a different life when you do that," he said.

Then I began to say "Yes" more. When Mom asked me to give her a cup of tea, I said "Yes". I saw a big smile on her face. When Dad asked me to buy some food for him, I said "Yes". I heard his thanks. When I met problems in study, I said "Yes, I can do it!" I began to study hard and got good grades.

Saying "Yes" can bring good luck to me and make me happy. Let's say "Yes" to life. Say "Yes" when others ask for help. Say "Yes" to make this world a good place.

Although Lucy and Lily are twins (双胞胎), they are different in almost everything. Sweet food is Lily's favorite, but Lucy dislikes it. Lucy often gets up early, but Lily thinks it's terrible to get up early. Lily likes dark colors, but Lucy likes bright colors.

They often fight and think the other one is wrong. Today their parents decided to do something to help them. When Lucy and Lily closed their eyes, their parents brought them to the dining room. There was a big board (木板) in the middle of the room. Lily stood on one side of the board and Lucy stood on the other side. They couldn't see the other side of the board.

Dad asked, "What's the color of the board, my girls?" Lily opened her eyes and said, "It's black. " But Lucy said, "It's white. " Mom asked them to exchange their places. Then they found the other one was right.

Many people might think that if they had more money, then they would be happier in life. For example, people might look at what others have, like expensive clothes or nice cars, and wish they could have the same.

But the things that money can buy cannot bring happiness to a person for a long time. But is that really true? Studies have found that money can, in fact, make people happier. But it's not having money that brings happiness. Instead, it's giving money to others that makes people happy. It could be buying a gift for a friend or a family member. It could be buying a homeless person food to eat. It could be giving money to a person in need. Just think about the last time you used your own money to do something for someone else. How did you feel? Whether it is a small or large amount of money, people feel happier when they give. This is because making someone else happy makes the giver happy, too.

This idea of connecting (关联) your happiness to the happiness of others is called "ubuntu" in an African language. There is even a story about a man visiting Africa. He asked some children to race to a nearby tree. The first child to touch the tree would get a sweet treat. Surprisingly, all the children held hands and ran together. They all touched the tree at the same time. The man asked why they did this. The children simply said they could only enjoy eating the treat if everyone had one.

It was Mother's Day, but the young mother was a little unhappy, because she was 800 miles away from her parents. In the morning, she phoned her mother to wish her a happy Mother's Day, and her mother told her about the beautiful lilacs (丁香) in the garden.

Later that day, when she told her husband about the lilacs, he said, "I know where we can find all that you want. Get the children and come on. " So they went, driving down the country roads.

There on a small hill, they saw a lot of beautiful purple lilacs. The young woman ran quickly to enjoy the flowers. Carefully, she picked a few here and a few there. On their way home there was a smile on her face. When they were passing an old people's home, the young woman saw an old granny sitting in a chair. She had no children with her. They stopped the car and the young woman walked to the old woman, put the flowers in her hands, and smiled at her. The old granny thanked her again and again. She smiled happily, too.
