When I was young, I loved to read biographies (自传) of successful public figures, from ancient times to modern 1 , from China to abroad. They never failed to 2 me. And from all these successful people, I always find one common characteristic—grit.

Personally, developing the power of grit also led to miracles (奇迹) in my life. People around me all know that I'm 5 singing and public speaking. Yet only a few know that when I was a little girl, I had hurt my vocal cords (声带) badly and couldn't pronounce words properly. Teachers told me not to 6 my hobby in areas requiring the use of my voice. But how could I give up so 7 ? I really love to sing and talk! So, with courage and determination, I worked hard to undergo (经受) vocal treatments and 8 . After several years of hardship, my voice was slowly back to normal and I could take part in all kinds of activities including musical performances, debating and public speaking. My voice plays an important part in these activities. I'm also glad to say that most of my achievements have to do with such activities. This is also why I have the honor to be one of the speakers here today.

Grit has not only helped individuals around the world become the 9 people we know of today, but has also helped me overcome difficulties and led me on the path to achieve my goals.

This has convinced (使确信) me to believe in 10 that I hope I can convince you to believe in as well. It is the power of grit. The power of grit, unlike IQ or any talent, is something that everyone can have. It is the key to unlocking new miracles in your life and the lives of everyone worldwide, one step at a time.

Peng Jingxuan, a 26-year-old Chinese girl, is now studying in a music university in Paris. While learning abroad, she is also working at spreading traditional Chinese culture to the world. She can often be found on French streets, wearing a silk Han Dynasty-style dress and playing the guzheng to passers-by.

Born in 1995, Peng began to learn the guzheng when she was seven years old. After arriving in France in late 2017, she saw many people do street performances, but few of them knew about Chinese music. So she decided to play the guzheng on the streets.

Peng made her first performance in front of a theater in October, 2018. "I was very nervous at that time, but a lot of people said they enjoyed my performance," Peng said. Then she started to perform during weekends and holidays. After being asked plenty of times by local people about the guzheng, Peng now carries a book that explains the instrument to foreigners. Later, she posted her first video of playing the guzheng online and it spread quickly. From then on, Peng has posted many videos of her street performances. The videos have got many likes and made her a very popular guzheng artist. She has millions of fans on the Internet now.

More and more people show great interest in the guzheng after watching Peng's performances. "People come to me and praise me for the beauty of the instrument and the music. Every time they ask me which country the guzheng comes from, I am very happy to tell them it's from China." Peng feels she has more responsibility to spread traditional culture. "What is national is universal. I hope to play a bigger role in making Chinese music known by the world." said Peng.

On November 21, a special soccer match was held in Doha, the capital of Qatar. This was not the 2022 World Cup, but a friendly match between Chinese youth players and Qatari youth players.

The match was supported by a famous company. With its help, the 11 Chinese teenagers played matches, watched World Cup matches and participated in more football-related activities in Qatar from Nov. 19 to 23.

"Football is the most popular sport in the world. We hope Chinese youth love football and grow up healthily," said Lu Minfang, chairman of the company. To achieve this goal, he has also organized soccer training camps and donated 10,000 balls and some training equipment to schools.

How did these youth players feel? Because these teenagers worked as student journalists for Teen 21, they shared their experiences in Qatar with its readers.

What impressed (留下深刻印象) Chinese captain Huang Junyu most was their fierce (激烈的) match with Qatari youth players. They trailed (落后) by three goals in the first half. But in the second half, Huang Bo scored a hat-trick—three goals in a row—to end the game in a draw. "Qatar is good at attacking, but we have the spirit of never giving up," Huang said after the match.

The 11 Chinese players include three girls. Wu Tong is one of them. She played for 50 minutes in the friendly match. She said, "It's great that girls and boys can play together. Although we girls may be weaker physically, we are good observers and we have calm minds."

Though not as important as the 2022 World Cup, what they did promoted culture exchange between the two nations. Chinese teenagers brought Cuju to the game. The young players from both sides changed into traditional Chinese Cuju costume and experienced the traditional Chinese football culture together. "We could do a lot of fancy moves in Cuju. Both sides had a great time," said Zhang Lu of China.

Imagine someone is unfriendly in real life. You don't like it, right? Well, the same is true of online communication.

No one likes it when you "shout" in your messages. DON'T USE ALL CAPITALS! ! ! If you feel angry while writing a message, wait a bit. Read it again later and then send it. 

⑤RULE 3: Protect and respect

Don't share your personal information with anyone. Don't post your home or email address online. Be careful about "cyberbullying"—don't forward rumours (谣言) or say anything bad about other people. If you get messages like that or see them online, talk to an adult you know.

Money may not buy happiness, but it helps. Many teenagers want to learn how to manage money before going out into the world.  This idea is raised by Dr. Mara Harvey, a money expert. The following are some of her tips.

Learn to make money. Ask parents or neighbors if you can do chores to make pocket money. These could include washing a car or taking the dog for a walk.  In this way, you can also improve your communication skills, which will help when you have a grown-up job, too.

Help your money grow. Money can't grow if it's sitting inside a piggy bank. Put your money in the bank and you can get interest (利息).  One day you may feel surprised at how much money you have.

Make a plan. If you have a big event, such as a holiday coming up, it might mean you will need to spend more of your pocket money. Try making a plan for spending and saving.  Then it will help you take control of your money.

 Figure out how much you can reasonably spend each month. Spend your money on what you truly need. Then try to cut down on spending. For example, rather than eating out, you can choose to cook at home.

Have you ever heard of Wang Zhenyi? Perhaps most of us didn't know this great name until she  (introduce) in a CCTV programme.

Wang Zhenyi was a great Chinese scientist. She was born in the Qing Dynasty. At that time, girls had no chance  (get) a formal (正规的) education. , her father and grandfather were open-minded. They thought girls should share the same opportunities with boys. They encouraged her to read the books in their home library. Wang Zhenyi educated  (she) and read a lot about astronomy (the study of the stars, planets, etc.), maths, geography as well as medicine.

In her time, many people expected  (star) to tell what was going to happen. They thought certain events in the sky, such as lunar eclipses (月食) happened when gods were angry. But Wang Zhenyi thought  (different). She believed in facts. In order to explain those "strange" events, she did some experiments. In one, she used  round table as the Earth, a lamp as the Sun and a mirror as the Moon. She moved them around to show what actually  (happen) during a lunar eclipse: when the Earth is passing directly  the Sun and the Moon, the sunlight cannot reach the Moon and the Moon disappears.

Throughout her short life, Wang Zhenyi wrote many articles about her research. In her articles, she explained difficult ideas in clear and  (simply) ways so that people could understand science more easily. She helped make science available to more people. She made a great contribution (贡献) to astronomy at that time.
